Dear Archive-users: Strategy in any
organization has many complexities and directions. We have
taken a sampling of strategy articles that we feel best lead
a company to better execution, our business focus. We would
appreciate recommendations from our readers for any
additional articles on strategy.
Article #1: The Discipline of Market leaders
We have compiled this brief summary of the key thoughts from
the book of the same name. We think this book is a staple
for anyone's business library. It beautifully clarifies that
a company must choose 1 of 3 strategies to focus on or else
there is no chance for greatness. If you would like the
longer article, send Winston an email and he will send.
Article #2: Aligning Actions and Values
Jim Collins of "Good to Great" fame writes about getting
into action around vision and values -- spend less time
arguing over the words and spend more time aligning your
organization in a consistent manner.
Article #3: Catalytic Mechanisms
Another SwitchGear favourite from Jim Collins. Collins
speaks about putting tactical mechanisms in place that force
the right behaviours to occur. Every opportunity, the
SwitchGear team is building out these mechanisms for our
clients. Fascinating read!
Article #4: Disruptive Innovations in Health
Our interest in healthcare stems from Bruce's past at St.
Elizabeth Healthcare and Winston's Board work with the
Victorian Order of Nurses. This article is a great example
of how innovation can shift an industry even if healthcare
isn't your thing.
Article #5: Matching People and Jobs
This will be of interest to Executives in HR or on the front
line of large organizations or business units. Interesting
insights into how to put the right bums in the right seats
and manage human assets -- it isn't by chance that the best
companies do this better than most.
Article #6: Stop Making Plans, Start Making Decisions
The authors write about the flaws in the annual planning and
budgeting process of most large companies, and how the
process gets in the way of strong decision-making. We
incorporate many of their ideas when we facilitate strategy
sessions. |
